Candle Care Guide
Welcome to the Cosmic Candles family! To ensure you get the most enjoyment and safest experience from your hand-poured, celestial-inspired candles, please follow these essential care guidelines. Proper candle care helps your candle burn more cleanly, last longer, and throw scent more effectively.
1. Trim Your Wick
-
Before each light: Always trim your wick to 1/4 inch (6mm) before lighting your candle.
-
Why it's important: A shorter wick creates a cleaner, brighter flame, preventing excessive soot, mushrooming, and uneven burning. This also helps extend the life of your candle. You can use a wick trimmer, nail clippers, or even scissors.
2. Allow a Full Melt Pool
-
First burn is crucial: On the first burn, allow the candle to burn until the entire surface of the wax has melted from edge to edge. This creates a "melt pool" across the entire diameter of the container.
-
Why it's important: This prevents "tunneling," where only the center of the candle burns down, leaving a ring of un-melted wax around the edges. Tunneling wastes wax and shortens your candle's lifespan. The first melt pool can take several hours, depending on the candle size.
3. Burn Time Limits
-
Recommended burn time: Do not burn your candle for more than 3-4 hours at a time.
-
Why it's important: Burning for too long can cause the wick to become unstable, leading to an excessively large flame, increased soot, and an overheated container, which can be a safety hazard. If your flame ever gets too large, extinguish the candle, let it cool, trim the wick, and then relight.
4. Safety First!
-
Stay in sight: Never leave a burning candle unattended.
-
Keep away from flammables: Always burn your candle on a heat-resistant surface, away from anything that can catch fire (curtains, paper, bedding, clothing, etc.).
-
Out of reach: Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.
-
Drafts: Avoid burning candles in drafty areas, as this can cause uneven burning, excessive flickering, and soot.
-
Clear the area: Ensure the area around the burning candle is clear of debris.
-
Extinguish properly: Always extinguish your candle with a snuffer or by carefully blowing it out. Avoid using the lid to extinguish, as this can trap smoke and discolour the wax.
5. Know When to Say Goodbye
-
Stop burning at 1/2 inch: Discontinue use when approximately 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) of wax remains at the bottom of the container.
-
Why it's important: Burning past this point can cause the container to overheat and potentially crack, or the flame can directly contact the surface below, posing a fire risk.
6. Store Your Candles Properly
-
Cool, dry place: Store your candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or strong artificial light.
-
Why it's important: This prevents discolouration, fading of scent, and the wax from melting or softening.
By following these simple candle care tips, you'll ensure a beautiful and safe burning experience with your Cosmic Candles, allowing their unique scents and calming glow to fill your space.
